GAC GA4

2026-09-21 23:30:06

Model Overview

The Trumpchi GA4 is a C-segment sedan under GAC Trumpchi, officially launched on 18 January 2018 as a key pillar of the brand's "Sedan Revitalisation Strategy". Positioned between the GA3S and GA6, it was tasked with reviving Trumpchi’s sedan lineup and achieving a balanced portfolio alongside its SUV offerings. In March 2021, the GA4 underwent a major mid-lifecycle facelift and was renamed "GA4 PLUS", built on GAC’s Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA) with comprehensive upgrades. The original model was priced between RM73,800 and RM115,800, which was revised to between RM75,800 and RM140,800 post-facelift. The entire lineup adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with petrol powertrains, with no hybrid or pure electric variants offered across the range. Updates for the GA4 ceased after 2022, and as of 2026, all variants have been discontinued, meaning brand-new units are no longer available through official channels.

Design Language

The GA4 adopts GAC Trumpchi's "Light and Shadow Sculpture 2.0" design language, highlighted by its signature "Flying Dynamics" integrated chrome front grille. The front fascia features a triple-slat chrome grille seamlessly connected to eagle-eye headlamp clusters, delivering a sharp and dynamic look. Along the sides, a crisp character line runs from front to rear, carving out sculpted body surfaces that blend with the sloping fastback roofline for a sporty, coupe-like silhouette. The rear styling is clean, defined by arrow-feather LED combination tail lamps, wing-shaped LED daytime running lights, and LED front fog lamps, complemented by diffuser-like styling on both sides of the rear bumper.

In terms of dimensions, the original GA4 measures 4,692 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,500 mm in height, with a 2,660 mm wheelbase, giving it a length advantage within its class. The 2021 GA4 PLUS received a stretch, increasing the length to 4,735 mm while maintaining a width of 1,805 mm, a height of 1,500 mm, and an identical 2,660 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the GA4 incorporates Trumpchi’s family design aesthetic finished predominantly in dark tones. The dashboard features a wraparound layout trimmed with extensive soft-touch materials, accented by chrome strips and silver garnishes to elevate perceived quality. The 2021 facelift introduced a modernised T-shaped dual-screen layout, equipped with a 10.25-inch central infotainment touchscreen and a 7.0-inch full LCD instrument cluster for a cleaner, contemporary feel.

Powertrain and Performance

The Trumpchi GA4 underwent two major powertrain iterations. The 2018 debut model shared its 1.3T turbocharged and 1.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engines with the Trumpchi GS3. The 1.3T unit puts out 101 kW (137 PS) and 202 Nm of torque, equipped with a low-inertia E-Turbo, DCVVT dual continuous variable valve timing, and GCCS combustion control technology. The 1.5L engine produces 84 kW (114 PS) and 150 Nm of torque. Transmission options included an Aisin 6-speed torque-converter automatic for the 1.3T, a 5-speed manual for the 1.5L manual, and a more conventional Aisin 4-speed automatic for the 1.5L automatic.

The 2021 GA4 PLUS switched to a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine (code 3B15J1), belonging to GAC Trumpchi's third-generation all-aluminium direct-injection turbocharged engine family. It generates 120 kW (163 PS) and 235 Nm of torque. Power is delivered through either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Depending on the variant, the 2021 model recorded an official MIIT fuel consumption figure as low as 5.3 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the GA4 rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup; all variants feature a front-wheel-drive layout with no all-wheel-drive option available. Braking is handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, with ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) fitted as standard across the range. While the rear torsion beam performs decently during high-speed cruising and lane changes, it can struggle over minor road imperfections and speed bumps, transmitting noticeable vibrations into the cabin and leaving room for suspension damping refinement. The chassis setup is predominantly comfort-oriented with well-weighted steering and clear road feedback, while boasting 58 NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) benchmarks that claimed to surpass segment rivals.

Cabin and Features

In the cabin, the GA4 offers varying screen configurations depending on the variant. The 2018 model is equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display running the Injoy interface, supporting Bluetooth telephony, Baidu CarLife smartphone integration, and USB multimedia playback. The 2021 GA4 PLUS upgraded to a 10.25-inch central touchscreen and added a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster on higher trims, powered by GAC Trumpchi's ADiGO smart connected ecosystem. The infotainment system supports voice control, online navigation, and over-the-air (OTA) updates, though users have noted occasional system lag during daily operation.

On the comfort front, standard equipment includes a multifunction steering wheel, synthetic leather or leather upholstery, manual air conditioning, rear air-con vents, USB charging ports, and a PM2.5 air filter. Higher variants add keyless entry with push-button start, an electric sunroof, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, heated wing mirrors, and independent rear air vents. Seats are upholstered in fabric or synthetic leather depending on the spec, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats to expand boot capacity. The audio system comes with a basic 2-speaker setup on entry-level models, upgraded to 4 to 6 speakers on higher-spec trims.

Safety and Driver Assistance

For safety, dual front airbags come standard across the range, with higher-spec variants adding front side airbags and full-length curtain airbags. Standard active safety equipment across the lineup includes ESP, ABS, EBD, Traction Control System (TCS), Brake Assist, and Hill-Start Assist. Higher variants are also equipped with practical features such as a tyre pressure display, a reverse camera, and rear parking sensors. A 360-degree surround-view camera system is exclusively available on the 1.3T Automatic Premium and top-tier variants.

In terms of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the GA4 lacks Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities, offering only basic cruise control. The overall safety package is geared primarily toward urban commutes, lacking modern active driver aids like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which puts it behind same-price rivals in tech sophistication.

Market Performance and Reception

The Trumpchi GA4’s overall market performance fell well short of expectations. At its 2018 launch, GAC Trumpchi envisioned the model spearheading its sedan lineup, but it was quickly sidelined by buyers in its debut year. Heading into 2025, monthly sales flatlined entirely: sales in November 2025, December 2025, and January 2026 stood at zero units. As of 2026, the entire GA4 lineup is officially listed as "discontinued" on GAC Trumpchi's website and major automotive portals, marking the completion of its lifecycle and exit from the market.

Owner sentiment and market reviews remain heavily polarised. Positive feedback highlighted its exterior styling—often regarded as among the top three lookers in its segment—as well as decent ride comfort, quietness, and a punchy 1.3T-6AT powertrain with eager throttle response. However, criticisms were equally severe: equipment levels were modest for its price point, with entry-level trims lacking vital safety and comfort features. On complaint portals like CheZhiWang, the GA4 drew widespread quality complaints covering severe door and body rusting, engine cylinder misfires, cracked front passenger seats, noisy AC compressors, dashboard rattles, and replacement part supply shortages from the manufacturer. Notably, body corrosion appeared as early as the second year of ownership, with some owners reporting holes of about 2 cm rusted through the doors, pointing to build quality shortcomings during production. Furthermore, switching to a three-cylinder engine on the 2021 facelift further dampened market acceptance. Ultimately, the Trumpchi GA4 suffered from significant shortcomings in product strength, quality consistency, and brand appeal, resulting in a complete defeat in its segment.
